“Learning Partner” Mentoring Project

The Gary Literacy Coalition sponsors the “Learning Partner” Mentoring Project involving all 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade students at the Frankie Woods-McCullough Academy for Girls located at 3757 West 21st Avenue, Gary.

The “U-Read” component of this project allows each of the 156 young ladies, along with mentors from the community, to receive a new book each month, engage in book review discussions while fostering a love for reading. Students receive incentives for participation as well as have the opportunity to learn about career opportunities from selected community role models. This month, on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at 9:30 a.m., students will review “Muhammad Ali, The Greatest” by Tanya Savory. Adding to this exciting story about a historical boxer, students will listen to the experiences of the Number One Rated Female Boxing Champion of the Nation…Mary ‘the CHAMP’ McGee. Mary McGee is a Gary native who has excelled in this sports arena mostly dominated by males.

The Gary Literacy Coalition “Learning Partner” Mentoring Project is in its 12th year of supporting students. For more information direct inquiries to (219) 885-2229, Gary Literacy Coalition, Inc.
