KHEF, Inc. Chairman’s Award Recipient – Steve Sanders

The 2019 Katie Hall Educational Foundation, Inc. Chairman’s Award will be presented to Steve Sanders, co-anchor of WGN (Chicago) Miday News. Sanders co-anchors the news daily from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Channel 9. The television station is owned by Tribune Broadcasting, and can be viewed across America.

Sanders, a native of Birmingham, Alabama, has been hailed as one of the best broadcast journalists in the nation having won seven (7) Emmy Awards, the American Bar Association’s “Silver Gavel Award,” and awards from both the Chicago Bar Association and the Associated Press (AP).

An avid guitarist, Sanders recently performed in a jam session with famed blues guitarist, Buddy Guy of Chicago.

Past recipients of the Chairman’s Award are: Mrs. Coretta Scott King, founder of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Non-Violent Social Change; Emmy and Grammy Award winning documentary filmmaker of “The Civil War,” Ken Burns; O.J. Simpson Trial Attorney Carl E. Douglas; Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena, Mississippi; Trial Attorney Willie E. Gary, who won an historic multi-billion dollar wrongful death verdict against RJ Reynolds; and U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (posthumously), among other distinguished honorees.

During the awards luncheon, Casey Elizabeth Pfeiffer, executive director of the Indiana Historic Bureau will officially dedicate the “U.S. Representative Katie Hall and the Dr. MLK, Jr. National Holiday Law” historic marker to be permanently situated in the City of Gary. Dorothy R. Leavell, who is the chairman of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, publisher of the Gary and Chicago Crusader Newspapers and chairman of the Chicago Reader newspaper will receive the Katie Hall Educational Foundation’s Public Service Award. Likewise, Naomi Millender, a former president of the Gary Historical and Cultural Society, Inc. will receive the Foundation’s Merit of Distinction Award, posthumously.

The Seventh Annual Katie Hall Public Service Awards luncheon will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2019, Genesis Convention Center, Gary, Indiana. The VIP Reception will begin at 11 a.m. and the luncheon will begin at 12 p.m. Noon. The price of admission is $55 per person.

The public is invited to join the Katie Hall Educational Foundation, Inc. in saluting, Chicago’s very own, Steve Sanders, on Saturday, April 6th.
