The Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church Bible Bowl Jr. and Sr. Teams were triumphant in winning the International Bible Bowl Competition last weekend at the Gary Career Center.

All of the members of the Jerusalem team are regular active members of Sunday School at the church. The junior team was made up of five members ranging in ages 9 to 12 and the four members on the senior team ranged in ages 13 to 17. The junior team came in 1st place and the senior team came in 3rd.

Participating Gary churches included Trinity Baptist, New Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, First Baptist, Jesus Christ Outreach Ministries, New Bethel Fellowship, St. Timothy Community Church and a representative of the COGIC.

The contestants were required to study the books of Ruth and Esther in the Bible.

John King, the coach of the Jerusalem team, said the group began practicing in January on Saturdays and Mondays. He said, “We practiced by reading through the scriptures and the stories of the two women.”

King said the Jerusalem team was over the moon excited that they won. “This was the second year in a row that the junior team has won. The church family is extremely proud and supportive of the children,” he said.

All of the young people received medals and trophies. The Jerusalem Church received a first place plaque.

Rev. Isaac Culver, pastor of Jerusalem said he and the entire church are very proud of the young people. He said, “We believe in getting behind our young people because they worked very hard. It’s one thing to win, but another to repeat as winners. It was stiff competition, but it turned out very well. The young people love it and look forward to it each year. A lot of their parents were on the team when they were young and now their children are on the team. We are looking forward to next year.”
