But for some of our neighbors, especially in communities facing flooding, aging infrastructure, or concerns about lead, the challenges surrounding water are already part of daily life.
“Imagine a Day Without Water” is a national reminder that access to clean, reliable water connects us all. It’s not just about infrastructure, it’s about people, families, and communities coming together to protect one of our most essential shared resources.
Here in Cook County, our water system is both historic and vast. Much of it was built more than a century ago, serving generations of families and fueling our region’s growth. Today, as climate change brings heavier rains and more extreme weather, that same system faces new pressure. But our communities aren’t standing still, they’re organizing, innovating, and working side by side to build a stronger water future.
Here at Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, we’re proud to partner with residents, schools, community organizations, and local governments to turn those ideas into action. Across Cook County, neighborhood groups are creating rain gardens and native plantings that absorb stormwater and beautify streets. Youth organizations are helping to install green roofs and bioswales while learning valuable skills in environmental science and sustainability. Homeowners are joining rebate programs to add permeable pavement and rain barrels, doing their part to reduce flooding one block at a time.
These are the kinds of community-driven solutions that make a lasting difference, because they’re rooted in partnership, education, and empowerment. When residents see the impact of their efforts firsthand, it inspires more people to get involved.
Our progress also depends on collaboration between every level of government and our labor and industry partners. We are investing in infrastructure projects across Cook County that not only protects our water but creates good-paying local jobs. These projects give residents an opportunity to be part of the solution, building, maintaining, and innovating for a more resilient region.
Still, we know there’s more work to do. Many neighborhoods, especially those that have faced decades of underinvestment, continue to experience flooding and infrastructure challenges. That’s why equity must remain at the center of every project we undertake. Every family in Cook County deserves clean, safe water and protection from flooding, no matter their ZIP code.
