Hud awards over $3.2 million to the Gary Housing Authority to support emergency, safety and security needs

Funding awarded to the Gary Housing Authority will help safeguard resident health and safety

GARY, IN– U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Ben Carson announced the availability of over $3.2 million to the Gary Housing Authority to address emergency, safety and security needs impacting residents in Gary, Indiana. HUD is awarding the Gary Housing Authority a Capital Fund Emergency Safety and Security grant in the amount of $3,212,125.

HUD’s Capital Fund Emergency Safety and Security Program supports public housing authorities as they address related physical work items resulting from an unpreventable or unforeseen emergency that poses an immediate threat to life, health, or safety of residents, or property and that must be corrected within one year of funding.  Emergencies are funded through a special set aside of the Capital Fund which was $16.5 million in FY 16 and FY17.

“Everyone should feel safe and secure when they are at home,” said HUD Midwest Regional Administrator, Joseph P. Galvan. “This grant will provide the Gary Housing Authority new resources to help ensure community safety, particularly for frail, elderly and disabled individuals, while promoting meaningful access to the community.”

This funding will facilitate the demolition of 254 public housing units at the Concord Village and Delaney West developments. Since these sites are integrated into existing neighborhoods, it is difficult for the housing authority to prevent illegal trespassing, vandalism and other nefarious activity endangering the safety of the elderly and disabled residents in adjoining the demolition sites.
