THE GARY HOUSING AUTHORITY will open their wait list for the first time in 10 years.

The Gary Housing Authority (GHA) waiting list for Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers is  open now through 4:00 p.m., Sunday, May 28, 2017, with a new online application process. The Housing Choice Voucher program provides rental assistance to individuals and families who meet eligibility guidelines by paying a portion of rent directly to private rental property owners.

The online application will be available at garyhousing.hcvlist.org. Interested families and individuals may apply 24 hours a day during the application period, using a computer or mobile device with Internet access. Applicants will be required to have a valid, working email address. Free email accounts are widely available online, and free Internet access is available at Gary and Lake County public libraries. No applications will be handed out or accepted in person, or by mail, email, or fax at any GHA office.

At the end of the application period, GHA will use a randomized computer process for all applications received, to select up to 5,000 applicants for placement on the Housing Choice Voucher waiting list. A preference for assistance will be given to applicants who live or work in the City of Gary and within five miles of the city boundaries, and applicants who are elderly (62+) and/or disabled. As funding is available, GHA will contact applicants for program eligibility determinations.

“Our voucher program is presently funded to assist 1,750 local families, but our research indicates that as many as 4,000 Gary families could be eligible for Section 8 housing assistance,” said Julian Marsh, Gary Housing Authority Executive Director. “The housing authority’s new online application will help to make the application easier to access, as well as more streamlined and efficient, and we’re hoping that all eligible and interested families and individuals will apply.”

A dedicated call center will provide support to applicants at (219) 390-9115 (local) or (888) 393-3263 (toll free), between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. CT every day during the application period. In order to receive the best service, applicants are advised to call this number and should not come to and/or contact the Gary Housing Authority offices.

Since 1938, the Gary Housing Authority (GHA) has provided affordable housing opportunities for the residents of the City of Gary, Indiana. GHA has assisted thousands of families with rental assistance through the Housing Choice Voucher program since 1974.

GHA continues its commitment to the Gary community by operating eight multi-family properties for low-income families, elderly individuals, and individuals with disabilities. Through the progressive thinking and support of the Board of Commissioners with the support of HUD, GHA has been able to carry out its objectives of providing safe, decent, and sanitary housing for those who could otherwise not afford housing accommodations on the private market.

    1. I’m really surprised the HA did this. With huge cuts to HUD already causing Houston and Dallas to rescind vouchers already in use, some 1500, and with the massive HUD cuts coming in 2018, I would think the HA would be tightening their belts not giving false hope to people that they may get a voucher. The reality now is that if you don’t have a voucher you are never going to get one and if you do have one you may lose it next year. Plus landlords are bailing from Section 8 because they see the writing on the wall. The program, as it is now, is unsustainable. Time limits and mandatory work requirements will in place by next year, plus the funding is being cut 13%, there is not going to be any new funding to expand vouchers. I think the local HA needs to get its head out of the sand.

    2. People wait 10 plus years to receive vouchers in every city and state. Now that we got an idiot in office folks won’t get vouchers at all. There is a war on the poor and Jesus will soon return and the rich and greedy elite will feel his wrath. Housing, education, food and clean water is a human right. Wake up.
