High School Recap: Rich Township girls’ teams a force in athletics

Strengthening the district’s reputation as a force in athletics, the Rich Township High School District 227 Special Olympics basketball team took home the Gold on January 24, 2022.

The team was unable to compete in 2020 due to the pandemic. Since their return to play, the Raptors Special Olympics basketball team has won the division title again.

Special Olympics Basketball Team Head Coach Kathleen Guitierrez said, “Two years ago, our ‘OlyRockStars’ basketball team was headed to state for basketball but the pandemic stripped them of this glory.

“Two years later we were able to begin our basketball season and our Raptors Special Olympics basketball team took home the Gold, winning their division title again. We are headed back to state for the Championship March 11 – 13!”

Adding to the school’s athletic glory, the Rich Township High School girls bowling team rolled its way to the Conference Championship in January, winning the 2022 Southland Athletic Conference championship on January 27.

The win marks the first championship in Girls Bowling history for the Rich Township Raptors.

“Overall it was a great experience for our lady bowlers this year. They really did a great job in reaching their goal of winning the conference championship,” said Head Coach Stacie Wolf.

“These were some of the highest average scores I have seen in my career as a coach in Rich Township. I couldn’t be more proud of the ladies’ accomplishments.”
