Harlem Fine Arts Show returns to Chicago November 16

When the Harlem Fine Arts Show (HFAS) returns to Chicago November 16 – 19, they will host several events to engage established and emerging artists. In recognition of the exhibition’s new home, at the state-of-the-art Malcolm X College (MXC), HFAS will host a Malcolm X T-Shirt Contest that is open to all visual artists. The Grand Prize winner will receive a $500 cash prize and a second-place winner will receive a $250 gift card from a local art supply retailer. The awards will be presented as part of the HFAS Opening Night Reception on Thursday, November 16.

The winning shirt design will be produced and sold during the four-day run of the HFAS, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the Malcolm X College Nursing Program Scholarship Fund. Each entry must be original in concept, design and execution and may include a variety of media, or be computer-generated. Winners will be notified by November 10 and will be listed on the HFAS website. Special guest judge for the contest will be Ilyasah Shabazz daughter of Malcolm X, who will be part of the Gala Reception kicking off the event on Thursday. This will be Shabazz’s first visit to her father’s namesake institution. The third daughter of Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz, Shabazz, is an educator, activist, motivational speaker, and author of award winning publications. She will be at HFAS through Friday, November 17, and be signing copies of her books: X: A Novel, Growing Up X and Malcolm Little: The Boy Who Grew Up to Become Malcolm X.

“Our T-Shirt contest is a perfect way to recognize the historic significance of Malcolm X and his namesake institution, while celebrating this magnificent new facility,” said Dion Clarke, founder of the Harlem Fine Arts Show.

The four-day traveling exhibition and sale of contemporary paintings, sculpture and photography is the largest of its kind featuring art from the African Diaspora. The exhibition is open to collectors, art enthusiasts, educators, and professionals and has as its theme, “Fine Art and the Art of Healing.” The Opening Night Gala Reception will be hosted by the North Shore (IL) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated.

The HFAS’ 2017 multi-city tour kicked off in New York this February with the theme “The Health and Healing Power of Art.” During this year’s Chicago exhibition HFAS will showcase and celebrate African Americans in the medical field, and raise awareness about medicine as a career choice for young people. Partnering with HFAS in this effort is the Cook County Physicians Association (CCPA), the Chicago affiliate of the National Medical Association (NMA).

HFAS’ opening night will include a Salute to African Americans in Medicine. The 20 Chicago area doctors, representing some of the most prestigious medical institutions in the Midwest will be recognized for their outstanding medical careers and philanthropic work. On Saturday, September 2, HFAS will partner with the CCPA, as they host their 2017 Jazz Brunch, a scholarship fundraiser for medical students. HFAS will present the work of several artists at the event and contribute to the organization’s scholarship fund.

A mainstay of the Harlem Fine Arts Show is Youth Empowerment Day, a special preview for area students to receive a private tour of the exhibit and meet the artist that this year will include Shabazz. There will be a special focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (S.T.E.A.M.), and in addition to the artists, the African Americans in Medicine honorees will interact with the students and answer their questions about their disciplines.

Partners for the 2017 Harlem Fine Art Show include the North Shore (IL) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, Rotary Club of Chicago Southeast, Jack and Jill / North Shore Chapter, the 100 Black Men of Chicago, the DuSable Museum the Chicago Crusader and the Chicago Defender.
