While many newspapers have come and gone, excitement is building as the Gary Crusader prepares to celebrate a historic milestone with its 55th Anniversary Gala on Friday, June 3 at the B. Coleman Aviation hangar at the Gary/Chicago International Airport.

After years of crusading against racism, poverty and inequality, The Gary Crusader is ready to host the biggest party Gary has ever seen!
The lavish affair will honor the newspaper’s illustrious and inspiring history along with Gary’s pioneers. They include the late Lake County Commissioner Roosevelt D. Allen, the Gary Crusader’s first female editor, the late Gary historian Dharathula Millender and retiring State Senator, Earline Rogers.
Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson is the honorary chairperson of the Gary Crusader’s 55th Anniversary Gala.

The event will bring together the Who’s Who of Gary, whose history and struggles are shared with a newspaper that has weathered a declining industry. In many ways, The Gary Crusader’s history reflects that of the city it has covered since 1961. In a challenging economy, together the Crusader and Gary continue to fuel an inspiring comeback story that has made headlines. Now, the achievements will be the focus of a festive celebration.

Certainly, one of the highlights will be the critically acclaimed author and renowned scholar, Michael Eric Dyson, who will be the keynote speaker at the gala. For those who attended the Chicago Crusader’s 75th Anniversary gala in Chicago last year, you already know his speaking style and why he is coming back for Gary. Dyson will mix social, political and controversial remarks in a poetic rhythm and blues interpretation of his own creation that will have everyone inspired.
