One of Chicago’s most respected music ambassadors and cultural historians will be recognized for a lifetime spent preserving and promoting Black music when George Daniels, founder of George’s Music Room, receives a Lifetime Achievement Award during Lynwood Fest on Saturday, August 8.
The Village of Lynwood, led by Mayor Jada D. Curry and the Lynwood Village Board, will honor Daniels during the annual summer festival, which runs from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Southland Center, 10 Southland Drive in Lynwood.
Known throughout the Chicago area as “Uncle George,” Daniels has spent more than six decades championing Black music and the artists who shaped it. Widely regarded as one of Chicago’s foremost music historians, Daniels has built a reputation for documenting the city’s rich musical legacy while creating opportunities for performers whose careers have influenced audiences around the world.
The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes Daniels’ longstanding contributions to the music industry, his commitment to preserving Chicago’s musical heritage and his impact as a Black entrepreneur whose business became a gathering place for artists and fans alike.
For decades, George’s Music Room has served as more than a venue—it has been a gathering place where musicians, promoters, radio personalities and music lovers came together to celebrate Chicago’s rich legacy of jazz, blues, soul, R&B and gospel. Artists from across the country have visited the venue, while fans often lined up for the opportunity to see some of their favorite performers in an intimate setting unlike any other in Chicago.
Organizers say Daniels’ influence reaches far beyond his business. Throughout his career, he has helped support and elevate many artists while serving as one of Chicago’s foremost keepers of Black music history. Whether attending concerts, community festivals, awards programs or other social gatherings throughout Chicago, Daniels remains a familiar face whose love for music and people has never faded. His continued presence at events across the city reflects the admiration and respect he has earned from generations of performers and music lovers. His dedication has earned him the respect of musicians, promoters and audiences across multiple generations.
As part of the celebration, Mayor Curry will be joined by several Chicago-area entertainers who will perform some of Daniels’ favorite songs in tribute to the man many affectionately call “Uncle George.” The musical salute will accompany the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award recognizing his global contributions to the music industry and his enduring commitment to the city of Chicago.
While the tribute to Daniels serves as one of the festival’s highlights, Lynwood Fest will also feature a full day of family entertainment. Visitors can enjoy live musical performances, local vendors, food trucks, free haircuts for children and a fireworks display to conclude the evening.
Village officials describe the annual festival as one of the Southland’s signature summer events, bringing together residents from throughout Cook County for a day celebrating community, culture and family.
Mayor Curry said Lynwood Fest continues to strengthen community ties by providing a welcoming gathering place for residents of all ages.
“The energy and excitement surrounding Lynwood Fest each year is something truly special. It brings me so much joy to see families laughing, dancing, and creating lasting memories together. Hosting this annual celebration is one of the many ways we continue to build a stronger, more connected Lynwood. We invite everyone to come out, enjoy the festivities, and experience the pride and unity that make our village so unique,” Curry said.
The festival is free and open to the public. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for outdoor seating, and organizers recommend arriving early for parking and preferred viewing locations.
