Trina Robinson-Dorsey could sing one of Tramaine Hawkins’ songs at the age of four before she could talk well. She was in the back seat of her parent’s car while they were on a family trip when her father Pastor David Robinson and mother Overseer Vee Robinson noticed that their daughter had a gift – Trina could sing.
Dorsey’s innate ability to sing, and because it ran in her family, were the two motivating factors behind her decision to become a singer. Dorsey has been singing with some of the most renowned gospel singers in the music industry for quite some time. She has sung with Dr. Ricky Dillard and the New Generations Choir, along with Dr. Bobby Jones on his weekly television show “The Bobby Jones Hour.”
She said, “I’m known for the song ‘Oh, Sweet Wonder,’ which I sang with Ricky Dillard and recorded live in 2005. I’ve also sung on the New Friendship Baptist Church of Gary premier CD, as well as traveled with them for a taping on Dr. Jones’ television show last year in June. Since that time, I’ve been singing with him on Saturdays and Sundays on the Impact Network as one of his lead soloists.”
Because Dr. Jones is good friends with radio celebrity Tom Joyner, he asked him if he thought I would be interested in going with him on his cruise to lead devotions on board. The cruise is the Fantastic Voyage 2017, featuring guests like Anthony Hamilton, Mary J. Blige, Frankie Beverly, Ice Cube, The Manhattans, K-C and Jojo, The Barkays, Fantasia and many more. “Of course, I was interested!” she said, “In fact, the day of our planned return from the cruise is the day that my new single titled ‘Grateful’ is scheduled to drop.” The dates of the cruise are April 2 through April 10, 2017.
Dorsey says she is a member of the Praise and Worship Team at New Revelation Missionary Baptist Church, along with her husband Melvin Dorsey. Melvin is also a Deacon. She said she was inspired to go into gospel singing because of her love for God and desire to reach women, children, and people in general. Dorsey describes it as her passion.
She said, “I’ve been through so much over the years, but now I’m married with four children and one grandchild. I’ve been a divorcee, healed of cancer, gone through a broken marriage and had my children restored and brought home to me. Through it all God opened major doors for me and the favor of God released me. I also want to thank Gospel Sunrise Productions and WGVE radio for playing all my music over the years and supporting my ministry. That’s the reason my single is called ‘Grateful’.”
Dorsey feels being able to travel with Tom Joyner and all the celebrities that will be on board the Fantastic Voyage 2017 is a great opportunity for her and a major door that may open other doors. She said, “I’m kind of scared because I can’t swim!”
