Gary Maternal Child Health Clinic to close

The Gary Health Department announces that its Maternal Child Health Clinic will close effective December 31, 2017, after 41 years of service.

The Indiana State Department of Health awarded grant funding to the Gary Health Department in 1979 to provide medical services for the Children and Youth Clinic. The clinic provided services for children that were uninsured and underinsured. The City of Gary matched funding yearly to maintain services at the clinic.

In 1991, the infant mortality rate in Lake County became the second highest in the State of Indiana. The clinic received grant funding to provide prenatal care services for uninsured women. The name of the clinic was then changed to Maternal Child Health.

Dr. Douge Barthelemy, clinic pediatrician for 41 years, and Dr. Anthony Iwuagwu, clinic obstetrician-gynecologist for 15 years, are both commended for their dedicated service.

The Maternal Child Health Clinic staff hosted a “closing dedication” event at the Gary Health Department, 1145 W. 5th Avenue, on December 13, 2017.
