“Love Shouldn’t Hurt” GARY “DAY OF ACTION”
The City of Gary’s Commission for Women has partnered with businesses, organizations and agencies to present a number of events during October; Domestic Violence Awareness Month to engage community discussion about the effects of domestic violence.
The Commission for Women has various events and activities planned in an effort to create more awareness and to promote programs available to citizens. Events and activities include “Taco-Bout It Tuesday” where the Commission partnered with the IGNITE organization to present a session for teen and young adults on relationship issues, dating violence and sexual assault, Finance-Budgeting with First Midwest Bank, Health & Beauty, Self Defense sessions and more.
On Friday, October 19, 2018, the Commission will partner with the YWCA for a “City of Gary Day of Action”. A Domestic Violence Awareness Vigil will be held at 5:00 p.m. at the YWCA, 150 W. 15th Avenue. The Vigil will be in recognition of all victims, survivors and to those we have lost to domestic violence. All are asked bring a $1.00 and to wear purple in support of the cause. Proceeds will go to victims of domestic violence.

The Gary Commission for Women aims to ensure that women who are residents of Gary receive important services if the need arises and works to educate the community on issues of special interest to women. The commission also manages an emergency shelter that caters to women and children victims of homelessness, domestic violence or sexual assault. For more information
