Former Mayor Richard Daley is slated to give a deposition in a federal lawsuit accusing him of ignoring evidence that a former police commander tortured dozens of black suspects.
Lawyers for the people’s law office are scheduled to take Daley’s deposition in the case of Alonzo Smith on January 17.
He claims he was tortured while in police custody during the time commander Jon Burge was in charge of the Chicago Police Department.
If the deposition goes forward, it would mark the first time Daley has given sworn testimony as part of a Burge-related lawsuit about what he knew of the painful legacy of police torture.
