Former Attorney General Lynch keynotes Gary NAACP banquet

Gary’s Genesis Convention Center was abuzz with excitement as guests arrived for dinner on June 2, filing into a banquet room dressed with glistening crystal and crisp linens. The banquet’s headliners and the reason for the excitement were former U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch and the Honorable Gonzalo P. Curiel.

The Gary NAACP’s 53rd Annual Life Membership Banquet highlighted with this year’s theme, “Steadfast, Unmovable and Never Silent …,” the NAACP’s continued commitment to equality and justice.

Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson introduced former Attorney General Lynch, her college friend and soror. The president of the Gary Branch Stephen C. Mays, introduced the Honorable Gonzalo P. Curiel, Judge, United States District Court, Southern District of California.

Honorary Chairman, Gary Crusader Publisher and Editor, Dorothy R. Leavell delivered Recognition and Acknowledgement remarks, accepting Branch President Mays’ thanks for “keeping our community informed and enlightened.” Leavell is also presently Chairman of the 200 plus member National Newspaper Publishers Association.

The Gary Branch of the NAACP was established in 1916.
