Father Pfleger, protesters threatened with arrest if Dan Ryan shut down

By Keith Chambers, Chicago Crusader

Illinois State Police have threatened to arrest Saint Sabina’s Father Michael Pfleger, who plans to shut down the Dan Ryan expressway on Saturday, July 7 as part of a march to protest the shootings in neighborhoods in Chicago.

The march will take place on the expressway at 10 a.m. from 79th St. to 67th Street. Pfleger is asking all participants to meet at 9:45 a.m. at the Carter Temple CME Church, 7841 S. Wabash Ave. A free bus ride is being offered to those who want to ride a bus to the march.

“If they say doing this will pull officers from the most needed neighborhoods in the city of Chicago, then pull them from the North Side,” Pfleger said, in a news conference Tuesday, July 3.

Pfleger said Illinois State Police hand delivered a letter Tuesday morning that said they would arrest anyone who steps foot on the Dan Ryan Expressway.

“They’ll close any expressway when a president comes into town, they’ll close it for every event that’s going on in this city, they close down Lake Shore Drive for the Bulls . . . ” Pfleger said. “Why don’t you close it down for people and for lives?”

Pfleger remains defiant, saying he’s not going to allow the threats to stop his plan to shut down the Dan Ryan Expressway.
