“I Love Boosters”, is a film that tries to mix comedy, crime, and horror but seems to get lost along the way. With a promising lineup like Keke Palmer, Taylour Paige, and Naomi Ackie playing members of The Velvet Gang, you’d expect a thrilling ride. However, the movie flips between quirky heists and weird supernatural elements, leaving viewers scratching their heads.
The Velvet Gang, Corvette, Mariah, and Sade, are on a mission, targeting the Metro Designers chain as payback against designer Christie Smith (played by Demi Moore) for stealing Corvette’s design. Just when you think you know where the story is going, enter the Pinky Ring Guy (LaKeith Stanfield), who’s not just handsome but also a spirit-sucking demon. Why?
As if things weren’t wild enough, the gang finds an unlikely ally in Jianhu (Poppy Liu), a worker in Metro Designers sweat shop factory she works at in China. She has found a way to teleport from China to San Francisco to teleport Metro Designer clothes back to the factory in China as a way to bring better working conditions for factory folks back home. This unexpected team-up tries to topple Christie’s empire but ends up making the plot even more tangled.
Directed by Boots Riley, the film does have its funny moments. But the storyline is all over the place. While some folks might enjoy the chaos, others may find the film’s jumble of unnecessary scenes and odd character paths a bit much.
Sadly, even with such an exciting cast, “I Love Boosters” just doesn’t hit the mark. It’s weighed down by a script that’s more confusing than captivating. So, if you’re thinking about going to see it, you might want to save your cash and just watch the trailer, it’s more interesting. This film gets just 1 wink of the EYE from me.
