An Excerpt from Dropout

by Jesus Vicente Ramos:

Tony: Bro, school be driving me crazy. All these things that we have to do in order to graduate high school.

Javi: Then people be talking about how high school is easy.

Tony: Maybe it was easy back then, and they don’t know what is high school nowadays.

Javi: You right, but they also have to understand that us as students go through a lot of stuff every day just to do good. People have their ups and downs, and sometimes is not easy for us to keep up with our good level.

Tony: People don’t get that, they think that we are prepared for anything, but in reality we as teenagers, we are not stable, and with all the stuff that social media brings to us, is just wild…

Javi: I’m done, done ok?!

Tony: What you mean?

Javi: I’m dropping out.Want to know what comes next? This new play and many more will be performed by professional actors at the upcoming EPIC Showcase. EPIC Showcase is a festival of plays and monologues written by students who participated in Silk Road Rising’s EPIC (Empathic Playwriting Intensive Course) Program this spring. EPIC is a compilation of short plays written by two generations of creative community members. What are the issues that young people and retired adults are thinking about? Come find out how storytelling connects us across the generations. The readings are performed by actors from the Silk Road Rising community.

Join us on June 8 and 9 at 2 p.m. to see the wonderful works written by Chicago Public School students and Brookdale Lake Shore Drive Senior Living residents. The event will be held at Silk Road Rising at the historic Chicago Temple Building, 77 W. Washington St., Pierce Hall, Chicago, IL.
