Diamond Christina Lewis remembered

The hearts of everyone in Gary was shaken by recent news that 22-year-old Diamond Christina Lewis was murdered. The father of her infant daughter, Kareem Jahbbar Willliams, 22, is being charged with the strangulation death of Lewis.

Lewis, along with her infant, were reported missing on April 10 by her father, Cornelius Lewis. Her child was found unharmed a few days before Lewis’ body was discovered April 21 in an abandoned home in Gary.

That’s where family, friends and the community held a candlelight vigil on Sunday, May 1 to pray and comfort one another as they tried to come to terms with yet another senseless loss to the Gary community.

Some wore t-shirts with an image of Lewis’ face and a poem on it. There were several clowns in attendance to lessen the emotional pain expressed by the adults, who understand all too well the heartbreaking ugliness of this tradegy. Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson was among those that spoke, people prayed and others shared hope and memories as they lit candles in memory of Diamond Christina Lewis.
