Dangerous weather forces schools to cancel classes

The cold snap that has gripped Gary and the Midwest forced officials to cancel classes on January 4 and January 5.

Students were scheduled to return to school from the holiday break, but on Wednesday, Jan. 3, officials announced the cancellations of classes because of the frigid weather. Weather forecasters predicted wind chills to bring temperatures below zero on Thursday and Friday.

Gary Community School Corp. students received an extended holiday break with the cancellation of classes Thursday and Friday because of frigid weather.

The district’s 4,700 students began their holiday break December 21. They will return on Monday, January 8 when temperatures are expected to be above 32 degrees.
