After losing their season opener on Thursday, April 1, the Chicago Cubs improved to 2-1 on the season with a 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday, April 4, at Wrigley Field.
The Cubs received a strong pitching performance from their off-season trade acquisition Zach Davies, who pitched five (5) 2/3 innings and struck out 5 batters in the victory.
“Whatever trade I’m a part of,” Davies said via cubs.com, “You kind of just let it go and do your job out there. Getting hung up on that, at least personally, it doesn’t do anything for me.”
With the Cubs leading 2-0 in the bottom of the 3rd inning, Davies would receive additional run support from his teammate Ian Happ.
Happ hit a solo home run in the 3rd inning, giving the Cubs a 3-0 lead on Sunday. The home run by Happ was his first of the season.
“Being able to get ahead of guys, being able to locate the fastball,” said Davies, about his pitching sequences via cubs.com, “just helps that changeup play more and get them more aggressive and swinging out of the zone.”
Davies and the Cubs bullpen held the Pirates to only three runs in the contest.
Final Score: Cubs 4, Pirates 3.
With the victory, the Cubs won their first series of the MLB season.
