The Gary Crusader Newspaper celebrated its 55th anniversary on June 3, 2016. The celebration was  held in the Hangar at B. Coleman Aviation, Gary/Chicago International Airport. Our guests joined us for an evening filled with prominent guests, gourmet dining, entertainment and dancing.

THE B. COLEMAN AVIATION hangar, which opened in 2013, will be the site of the Gary Crusader Newspaper’s 55th Anniversary Gala on Friday, June 3. Several notables from Northwest Indiana and the Chicagoland area are expected to attend.

The 55th Anniversary celebration of the Gary Crusader kicked off Monday, April 4th, 2016 with festive planning reception at the Genesis Convention Center. The event included speeches by event Chairperson, Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson and Dorothy R. Leavell, publisher of the Crusader Newspaper Group, which produces the Chicago Crusader and Gary Crusader. Jazz music and fine dining highlighted the evening as guests joined committees to begin planning the birthday bash. The theme of the gala was “55 years of highlighting our past and crusading for our future.” Read more about the Anniversary Kick off Reception here!

2015 Marked the 75th Year of the Chicago Crusader Newspaper!

Thank You for joining us in celebrating this milestone!

“The Chicago Crusader will be 75 years old this year and we plan to celebrate,” said Dorothy R. Leavell, Editor and Publisher of the Crusader Newspapers – Chicago and Gary. “For 75 years the Chicago publication has reported the news without fear or favor and been a community resource to tell ‘our’ story from a Black perspective,” she continued.

75th anniversary photoMrs. Leavell celebrated 50 years of working at the Chicago Crusader in 2011 and recounted her career that did not include “newspaper” when she was first employed in 1961. She tells the story with so much passion that one has to remember that that was 54 years ago, because she tells it as though it was yesterday.
