On April 3, 2015 Chuck Hughes received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Civil Rights Library. On April 7, 2017, Chuck Hughes was inducted into the National Civil Rights Library Hall of Fame. Early in life Hughes was active in the Civil Rights movement and his involvement was substantiated even further when an iconic photo depicting activist Chuck Hughes adorned the Newseum in Washington, D.C.

The Newseum is the location for an exhibit depicting the Civil Rights movement for the last 50 years. The exhibit which will run until January 2018 also features icons such as Muhammed Ali, Huey Newton and other prominent faces of the struggle. “It is humbling to know that my picture was selected to be on the front of the structure.” It is also gratifying to feel like you had a role in the movement.”
