City of Gary reminds residents of available cooling centers

With temperatures soaring into the 90’s this weekend, City officials continue to remind residents of important information during extreme heat conditions. The City’s Cooling Centers will be available for residents who may need relief from the hot weather.

Residents are also reminded to check on seniors and family members regularly and to report any cases of persons living in homes without fans or air conditioning or persons living in vacant structures to City Hall at (219) 881-1311 or via email at [email protected]. Residents may also visit the city’s website at www.gary.in.us. “Click” on “Report a Problem.”

The Gary Health Department has released a list of the city’s cooling centers that are open daily. A list of cooling centers open daily is attached. The Gary Public Safety Facility and all Gary Fire Stations are available for temporary/transitional relief from hot weather. Note: A facility will be identified as needed for extended stays.

Extended Hours–On an as needed basis

Residents should call 219-881-1214 after regular hours if in need of extended cooling center hours. Extended cooling centers are available on an as needed basis.

After Hours/Weekends

Residents may go to the Public Safety Facility, 555 Polk Street or to Gary Fire Stations for temporary/transitional relief from hot weather.

Residents should call 219-881-1214 for hot weather related Emergencies.

Additionally, residents may visit the beach from 8:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m. at Lake Street and from 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. at Marquette Park. Residents should be mindful that Life Guards are on duty from 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.
