City Of Gary Hosts 2020 Census Job Fair Wednesday, November 6

Gary Residents Can Earn Income And Help Gary Be Counted

The City of Gary will host a 2020 Census Job Fair to help inform and encourage Gary residents to take advantage of jobs available through the U. S. Census Bureau. Residents can not only earn temporary income, but can help Gary to reach an accurate count in the upcoming 2020 Census.

The Census Bureau is currently hiring for a variety of jobs and Gary residents are invited to learn more about census jobs and apply on site during a job fair on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at the new Goodwill Career Center located at 4610 W. Ridge Road. Job seekers may attend one of two sessions; from 9:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. or from 2:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m.  Residents may also complete an online application at http://www.2020census.gov/jobs.

In June this year, the city of Gary established a Gary Complete Count Committee (GCCC) that has been working to create awareness in the community and to share with the residents the importance of the census count and what it means for Gary. The GCCC is comprised of a diverse group of community-based leaders that will utilize their influence and resources in the city’s outreach efforts. Dr. Vanessa Allen-McCloud; President and CEO; Urban League Northwest Indiana serves as Chairperson; Dr. Sharron Liggins, Executive Director; Continuum of Care Network or Northwest Indiana and Arlene Colvin, Esq; Director of Community Development serve as Co-Chairs.

The U.S. Census plays a major role toward the quality of life in the City of Gary. The Census helps to shape decisions about how federal funds are disbursed to communities for housing, healthcare, roads, schools, hospitals, emergency services and other programs. As Gary begins to rebound, it is important to accurately capture the city’s progress and to have every resident counted in the census. The city of Gary will be “Checking it Once and Checking it Twice.”

For more information about the city’s campaign, contact the mayor’s office at 219-881-1302 or the Urban League NWI office at 219-887-9621. Additional information about the U.S. Census may be obtained through the Census website; census.gov.
