Chicago State University is set to make history after its Board of Trustees unanimously approved the addition of football, a move that will bring the City of Chicago its only NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) program.
University officials said the decision follows more than three years of planning and preparation and positions Chicago State for a new chapter in its athletic and institutional growth. Spring practice is scheduled for 2026, with the Cougars’ inaugural football season officially kicking off on August 29, 2026.
The first-ever Chicago State football game will mark a milestone not only for Cougar Athletics but also for students, alumni, South Side residents, and sports fans across the city. The program is expected to provide a new point of pride and visibility for the university while expanding opportunities for student-athletes.
During its inaugural season, Chicago State Football will compete as an independent program, allowing flexibility in scheduling a diverse slate of opponents. The Cougars are slated to join the Northeast Conference (NEC) beginning with the 2027 season.
University President Zaldwaynaka “Z” Scott described the vote as transformative for both the institution and the city.
“The launch of football at Chicago State ushers in a new era not only for our university, but for the entire city of Chicago,” Scott said. “As the city’s only NCAA Division I football program, we are creating history and building a legacy that will inspire pride, opportunity, and community for generations to come.”
Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Monique Carroll emphasized the broader impact the program is expected to have beyond wins and losses.
“Chicago State Football is more than just a new sport—it’s the start of a bold tradition,” Carroll said. “Our student-athletes will set the tone for what it means to wear Cougar green on the gridiron, and their impact will echo far beyond the scoreboard.”
The announcement has drawn support from leaders across Chicago’s sports community. Kevin Warren, President and CEO of the Chicago Bears, praised the university’s decision and the role football can play in strengthening communities.
“The addition of football at Chicago State is a tremendous step forward for the university and for the city of Chicago,” Warren said. “Football has the power to unite communities, inspire young people, and create lasting traditions.”
University officials said the Board’s decision reflects a broader commitment to expanding Chicago State’s athletic profile while deepening engagement with the surrounding community. Football will join the university’s existing NCAA Division I sports offerings, further elevating CSU’s presence on the national collegiate athletics stage.
Preparations for the program are already underway, with the university addressing infrastructure needs, recruitment, staffing, and facility planning. Additional details are expected to be released in the coming months as the Cougars move closer to spring practice and the historic 2026 kickoff.
Chicago State Athletics officials said fans can follow updates on the program’s development, including coaching announcements and scheduling information, as anticipation builds for the university’s first football season.
