Chicago State Cougars fall to Grand Canyon University 78-64 at home

The Chicago State Cougars fell to 0-5 in conference play after a 78-64 loss to the Grand Canyon University Lopes at home on Thursday, January 16, at the Emil and Patricia A. Jones Convocation Center.

Thanks to a great offensive effort by freshmen 1-2 punch Rajier Jones and Amir Gholizadeh (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Toronto Basketball Academy), the Cougars were competitive from the start.

Jones finished with a team-high 19 points for the Cougars, while Gholizadeh scored 17.

The Cougars first basket came on a jump shot by Ke’Sean Davis (Compton, Calif./Taft Charter H.S.) with 19:30 remaining in the first half, giving the Cougars an early 2-0 lead.

The Lopes responded with a big first half of their own, going 7-10 from beyond the three-point arc, on 55 percent shooting from the field, while earning a 43-23 half time lead.

In the second half, the Cougars went on a hot-shooting streak but it wasn’t enough, as GCU cruised to a 14-point victory.

Final Score: GCU 78, CSU 64.

In addition to a team high 19 points, Rajier Jones added four rebounds for the Cougars.
