CAPTAIN MARVEL KICKS BUTT!

In the name of full disclosure, I have never read a Captain Marvel comic. I went into the screening of this movie without any idea of what to expect. However, I walked out knowing what costume I’m getting for the next Halloween party.

Those of you who already know the story just skip ahead. Those of you, like me, who didn’t have a clue here is a short synopsis, hopefully without spoilers. Vers (Brie Larson) is a member of the special forces Kree military force called Starforce who are in an intergalactic war with the Skrull (who are shape shifters.) Yon-Rogg (Jude Law) us the commander of Starforce and is also mentoring Vers. It seems he may want to be a little more than a mentor, but I could have just been reading into it. During a mission against the Skrull, Vers falls to 1990’s earth and finds out things aren’t what she thought…or had been brainwashed to believe. She meets a low-level investigator for S.H.I.E.L.D, Agent Fury (Samuel Jackson with hair and without patch) and convinces him that aliens do exist, and they become a team.

I’m stopping here because you need to go and see the film. I enjoyed it because there were great female moments in the film. I wasn’t sure I liked the Captain Marvel character but as the film went on and things were explained, she went from begin an arrogant robot type to a kick butt superhero.

I also loved the diversity in the film on every level. Lashana Lynch as Carol Danvers’ best friend Maria Rambeau is quite amazing. She brings in the human emotions and loyalty. She is more a sister to Danvers than friend, a pilot, and mother. She carries a strength in her performance.

Of course, Samuel Jackson is Fury as only he can be. We see his beginning, his awareness, his acceptance.

Talos the leader of the Skrull shapeshifters invade Earth looking for Vers is played by Ben Mendelsohn. He is scary with just the right amount of humor…a lot of humor. He is one of my favorites.

Can’t finish this up with out mentioning the real star of this film, Goose the cat. (Did I mention earlier what costume I’m wearing for Halloween?) He steals the show. He and Fury have a very special relationship that just makes the film even more enjoyable.

As you see, I haven’t mentioned the person Captain Marvel, I don’t want to spoil that for you.

If you have seen any Marvel film, you know to stay in your seat till the end of the credits. If you haven’t, stay in your seat until the end of the credits.

GO SEE CAPTAIN MARVEL IN THE THEATERS. In fact, an IMAX or Dolby theater will be great to get the full effect of all the fight scenes and supersonic blasts. Get ready for Avengers Endgame in Theaters April 26th

Until next time, keep your EYE to the sky!
