Two Black men arrested at a Philadelphia Starbucks while waiting for a business meeting last month settled with the city for $1 each on Wednesday and received a promise that a $200,000 program geared toward young entrepreneurs will be established, the Associated Press reports.
Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson were at a Starbucks on April 12 when a manager called the police saying the men didn’t order anything and refused to leave the store.
“We were there for a real reason, a real deal that we were working on,” Robinson told the news service last month. “We put in a lot of time, energy, effort. … We were at a moment that could have a positive impact on a whole ladder of people, lives, families. So I was like, ‘No, you’re not stopping that right now.’”
The incident sparked massive outrage, which resulted in Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson apologizing, the manager departing from the coffee chain and the company planning to close 8,000 stores on May 29 to conduct racial bias training.
