The Beverly Arts Center is preparing to electrify its stage with big hair, bold moves, and a powerful message as it presents “Hairspray,” the beloved Tony Award-winning musical, from June 12 through June 22, 2025. The production will take place in the center’s Baffes Theatre at 2407 West 111th Street in the heart of Chicago’s Beverly/Morgan Park neighborhood.

Set in 1962 Baltimore, “Hairspray” tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a quirky, plus-sized teenager with a passion for dancing. When Tracy lands a spot on the popular “Corny Collins Show,” she quickly becomes a sensation and uses her newfound platform to fight for racial integration in television. Along the way, she faces off against a prejudiced network producer and her daughter, while drawing support from teen heartthrob Link, charismatic host Corny Collins, and the outspoken Motormouth Maybelle.

“We are absolutely delighted to bring the joyous and meaningful story of “Hairspray” to our community,” said Dr. Carla Carter, Executive Director of the Beverly Arts Center. “This musical is not only incredibly entertaining with its infectious music and energetic dance numbers, but it also carries a timeless message of acceptance and the importance of fighting for what is right. We believe it will resonate deeply with audiences of all ages.”

The Beverly Arts Center production will be directed by John Marshall, Jr., who brings years of experience and energy to the stage. “Bringing “Hairspray” to life on the Beverly Arts Center stage is an absolute joy,” Marshall said. “This musical is a vibrant celebration of embracing individuality and the power of unity. We aim to capture the infectious energy and heartfelt message of this classic, creating an unforgettable experience for our audiences.”

The show promises lively choreography, colorful costumes, and powerhouse vocals as it delivers a message of empowerment, inclusion, and joy.
