CREATED ON CANVA
As Black History Month draws to a close, students from Chicago Bulls College Prep and Rich Township High School will honor the legacy of the civil rights movement by giving back to their community. On Friday, February 28, 2025, these students will join forces with Chicago Cares to pack hygiene kits for unhoused individuals in Englewood, an act of service that highlights the ongoing struggle for equity in Chicago’s South Side.
The initiative, taking place at the Ogden Park Field House, will bridge the lessons of history with present-day challenges. Led by Sharee Onyezia, AP African American Studies Course Lead at the College Board, the event will explore the connection between the civil rights movement and community service. The interdisciplinary AP African American Studies course integrates history, literature, the arts, geography, and science to examine the significant contributions and experiences of African Americans. The curriculum covers pivotal moments such as the American Revolution, the Civil War, Reconstruction, Jim Crow segregation, and the Civil Rights Movement.
During the event, Onyezia will conduct a condensed AP African American Studies lesson, tying together themes of activism, resistance, and social responsibility. Chicago Cares will also facilitate a reflection activity, encouraging students to consider the broader impact of their service.
The students will pack hygiene kits containing essential items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, soap, hand wipes, and combs—supplies that can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those experiencing homelessness. Their efforts will be supported by several notable figures, including Brett Kube of Chicago Cares, Chicago business leader Robert Blackwell Jr., Mike Nick from the College Board’s State & District Partnerships, and Mike O’Sullivan from the College Board’s Government Relations team.
This hands-on experience serves as a powerful reminder that the fight for equity extends beyond the classroom. By engaging in service work, these students are not only learning about history—they are actively participating in shaping a more just future.
