Alleged killer and driver in Tyshawn Lee murder found guilty

Crusader Staff Report

Jurors over two days convicted two men who were found guilty for brutally killing 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee in a case that was a revenge murder involving two gangs.

Corey Morgan on Friday was found guilty of being the getaway driver for Dwight Boone-Doty, the gunman who was found guilty of first degree murder one day earlier.

Morgan was immediately taken into custody and denied bail.

The two shared the same trial, but were convicted by separate juries. Both await their sentencing, which will be given at a later date.

The two men endured over two weeks of testimony and damning evidence from prosecutors. In 2015, they said Boone-Doty lured Tyshawn from a basketball court in Dawes Park on the South Side, before he was led to a nearby alley. Here, prosecutors said Boone-Doty executed Tyshawn, shooting him several times, including the head.  Then they said Morgan drove Boone-Doty as the two fled from the scene of the crime.

During the trial, jurors heard an audiotape that captured Boone-Doty bragging to a fellow inmate about killing Tyshawn after Morgan’s brother was killed by the gang faction the Killa Ward. Tyshawn’s father, Pierre Stokes, was a high-ranking member of Killa Ward.

Crucial evidence from the computer system of the getaway vehicle, a black Ford Edge was taken from a rental car lot at Midway Airport. A few weeks after Tyshawn’s murder, the car was found abandoned in south suburban Dolton. Investigators also found GPS data from the SUV, which traced a path from Morgan’s house in Lansing to Dawes Park the afternoon Tyshawn was murdered. The information also showed the car went back to Lansing after the killing. Data from Morgan’s cellphone showed a similar route. The web browser history showed that just hours after the killing, someone looked up the Facebook pages of Tyshawn’s mother and father and news reports about the killing.
