Police believe the shooting of a 4-year-old boy in the Parkway Gardens Apartments in Woodlawn was by a gang memeber.
Kavan Collins was hospitalized Tuesday, June 28 after he was shot in the jaw. Police say the boy and a 28-year-old woman, who was struck in the head while she was in a bedroom, were unintended targets. As of press time Wednesday, Kavan was listed in serious condition at Comer Children’s Hospital, but relatives say they believe the boy will recover. The woman was listed in good condition at Stroger Hospital.
Police are searching for the suspects, who they believe are gang members based on tips from residents.
According to police, the shooters were in a dark-colored four-door vehicle. Around 9:10 p.m., they shot at a group of people as they mingled in the courtyard at Parkway Gardens, located in the 6400 block of South King Drive.
The next day, Pastor Corey Brooks of New Beginnings Church, announced a $10,000 reward to anyone with information leading to the arrest and conviction of the killer.
The shooting is the latest incident at Parkway Gardens Apartments, a sprawling complex where the mother of first lady Michelle Obama once lived. On May 14, 15-year-old De’Kayla Dansberry was stabbed to death by another teenager during an altercation at the complex. The teenager and her mother have been charged with first-degree murder.
The shootings on Tuesday comes as Chicago police prepare for the Fourth of July weekend, which in recent years has been the most violent period during the summer season. Some 70 shootings occurred during the three-day weekend last year. The year before, a record 85 shootings rocked the city during the holiday weekend.
