On Saturday, November 5, the day of what would have been Rekia Boyd’s 27th birthday, A Long Walk Home’s Girl/Friends invite and honor activists who have organized to bring justice to Rekia’s family to join us as we inaugurate the #SayHerName memorial series in Chicago. In collaboration with her family, North Lawndale community members, local artists, and Chicago’s youth organizers, the memorial will be a series of art and activism programs to spotlight Rekia’s story as well as lift up the voices of other African American girls and young women who have been victimized by interpersonal and state violence, culminating with a permanent memorial near Douglass Park, the site of at which police officer Dante Servin murdered Rekia in 2012.
